Hearing Aid Evaluation and Selection

Hearing loss can affect more than just the person diagnosed. When significant enough, it can also start to affect the friends and family you interact with. We highly encourage you to bring a family member or friend with you to these appointments for support and to help you in the decision making process. During the hearing aid evaluation, we will thoroughly review your audiogram and hearing loss with you. We will explain how your hearing loss can impact your ability to communicate in various environments. In addition, we will perform a needs assessment and discuss your lifestyle; for example, your participation in groups or social activities, work and home life, physical limitations with vision and dexterity, and discuss any chronic medical conditions that may impact your hearing and or hearing aid use in the future, while focusing on your most important priorities for hearing improvement.

There are many hearing aid brands and styles available to choose from. Based on your hearing loss and needs assessment, Dr. Volkman will educate you on your options and help narrow these choices for you. We can provide an in-office demonstration of our state-of-the-art digital hearing aids for you in the office so you can experience the benefits of amplification during the appointment. As we work with multiple manufacturers, we can test several brands of hearing aids to find the brand and technology that is best suited for you.

Hearing Aid Fitting

As a Dr. Cliff Hearing Up provider, Dr. Volkman will ensure you are maximizing the benefits of your hearing aids by following comprehensive best practices. Prior to your hearing aid fitting your hearing aids will be run through an electroacoustic evaluation in our test box to ensure they are working up to manufacturer specifications. On the day of your hearing aid fit, real ear measurements will be run to ensure good audibility and comfort of your devices. In addition, we will review hearing aid cleaning and maintenance, practice insertion and removal, as well as practice changing batteries or charging the devices. Dr. Volkman will also help you pair your hearing aids to cell phones or tablets for wireless streaming if you choose to do so.

You will have several follow-ups with Dr. Volkman during your trial period to adjust the hearing aids to your needs and requirements. This is where the art of hearing aid fitting comes into play. Based on your feedback and real world experience with the hearing aids, Dr. Volkman will fine tune your hearing devices and tailor their performance to meet your specific needs.
